Government Applauds Malawi Red Cross Polio Campaign drive

Health authorities in Kasungu District have commended the Malawi Red Cross Society for its support during the polio vaccination campaign, which ended on Friday. The campaign was conducted through the Integrated Community Based Health Project (ICBHP) supported by Gesundes Afrika being implemented in Kasungu district.

In an interview, Kasungu District Health Promotion Officer Isaac Mwavuli said sensitization efforts by the Malawi Red Cross Society helped the district reach about 281,104 children against the targeted 277,029.

“This campaign has been very successful because we have reached a large number of children than targeted,” said Mwavuli.

He added that the success was due to strong community awareness, where the Malawi Red Cross played a key role in educating people on the importance of the vaccine through the Mobile Van, Radio Jingles and door to door visits by the volunteers.

“This has been possible due to the efforts made by the Society in educating communities on the importance of the vaccine across different areas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, District Project Manager for ICBHP, Taonga Nyekanyeka, said it was important to take part in the campaign as polio is a dangerous disease that can cause paralysis in children and even death.

“We worked hand in hand with health workers and our volunteers to sensitize communities so that they could understand its importance and allow their children to receive the vaccine,” said Nyekanyeka.

Nyekanyeka further said that the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote quality health services and improve the wellbeing of both children and adults in the district.

The polio campaign started on Tuesday, 24th and ended on Friday 27th March 2026.
