Malawi Red Cross Society in collaboration with Malawi Defense Force with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross – ICRC- has conducted a second phase of International Humanitarian Law training in relation to journalism, targeting media practitioners under Blantyre Press Club.
Opening the two-day training in Blantyre, MRCS President Innocent Majiya said” This training represents an opportunity to equip media professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of conflict reporting, while also serving as ambassadors for the principles of IHL”.
Majiya then advised the journalists to ensure they use the skills not only improve the quality and impact of reporting but also contributing to a more informed global discourse on armed conflicts and the importance of international humanitarian law.
Concurring with Majiya, Counsel Kondwani Mdala from the Legal services at Malawi Defence Force asked the media participants to fully utilize knowledge gained on IHL.
Chairperson for Blantyre Press Club Luke Chimwaza has since appreciated Red Cross for such a workshop saying it is timely.
“In a world, and Malawi to be precise, where conflicts and catastrophes often dominate the headlines, it's crucial for us, the members of the media, to understand the principles and norms that govern International humanitarian law. I am very sure therefore, that this training will provide valuable insights and knowledge to help us navigate complex stories and shed light on critical issues affecting humanity, thanks to Red Cross for recognizing Blantyre Press Club,” said Chimwaza
After an intensive training the Journalists developed Standard Operating Procedures on Safety of Journalists and Media houses that MRCS will consolidate and work with Media Council of Malawi for further actions.
This second cohort have since been presented with certificates on IHL reporting, with MRCS IHL coordinator Felix Washon expressed satisfaction on the activeness of both cohorts, saying it shows the media in Malawi are keen to be ambassadors of IHL principles through their work.
