Strengthening Financial Sustainability- Peer-to-Peer Learning in Practice

The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) and Kenya Red Cross Society held a two-day peer-to-peer learning session focused on financial sustainability.

The learning session was held in Lilongwe on Monday and Tuesday.

Speaking during the opening session, MRCS Secretary General Chifundo Kalulu emphasized the importance of such exchanges, saying "Financial sustainability is key for sustaining Malawi Red Cross amidst donor fatigue. This platform allows us to reflect on our own practices while learning from other National Societies such as the Kenya Red Cross."

“This peer learning marks another step towards building a stronger, more sustainable humanitarian organization that can continue serving vulnerable communities in Malawi.” Added Kalulu.

The working session was facilitated by Salimu Hamadi Mwatengar, Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Innovation (MEA&I) Manager for Kenya Red Cross Society.

Through guided discussions, MRCS assessed its current financial sustainability framework and identified measures to strengthen its resilience and accountability.

“Financial sustainability is not just about money, it’s about ensuring National Societies like Malawi Red Cross remain strong, independent, and capable of serving vulnerable communities without relying on donors. Peer learning with Kenya Red Cross demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate progress toward this goal.” Said Salimu.

MRCS applauded the Kenya Red Cross for championing this initiative under the IFRC National Societies Localization Alliance, which fosters collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the Red Cross Movement.

Financial sustainability is a critical priority for Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, including Malawi Red Cross, as it ensures they can remain resilient and effective even amidst donor fatigue. The IFRC has developed a dedicated Financial Sustainability Framework to guide National Societies in strengthening their resources, structures, and adaptability.
